Our Mission The Helping Hand
Rescue Mission's (HHRM) main priority is to reach children that are suffering under impoverished conditions, and to provide
families with educational and character building instruction, food, supplies, and love.
Our History The Mission was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines,
and her mother, Florence E. Meringola. After witnessing local poverty conditions first hand, they invested everything that
they had with the view that if they could help even one person it was worth the investment.
Mission Program Highlights Happy Day Express (HDE) weekly children’s
outreach provides breakfast, lunch, inspiring music, and character building Bible lessons. HHRM’s Youth Making a Difference (YMAD) program
brings local High School students together with our Happy Day Express kids for tutoring, mentoring, crafts, and sports.
Mission kids and local high school students all benefit from this experience. Pantry Operations coordinates food drives, prepares packages for distribution,
and supports special holiday meals and community events. Community
Closet provides a friendly, warm environment in which people can “shop” for clothing and household
items at no cost. Partnerships
with local businesses, schools, churches and civic organizations magnify our efforts while fostering a tight knit community. Computer Learning Center provides instruction
and workshops for children and adults, helping to build strong students and a capable workforce. “Warm-Up Huntington!” partners HHRM with various
organizations to provide coats, sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, socks, and blankets to adults and children in need. Back-to-School program provides backpacks, school
supplies, and various personal items for children in Pre-K through 12th grade. Mid-year refills and continuous encouragement
contribute to positive learning experiences and resulting grades. Holiday Celebrations bring joy to hundreds of children that would otherwise be without. Easter,
Thanksgiving, and Christmas are among the holidays celebrated at Happy Day Express. Baskets of toys, candy, clothing,
and food are provided to children and families within our community.
